On one system, using Caja, when I create a new Folder under user it shows up as expected in the File Tree but not on the Desktop, in the other ( changed ) system it shows up in the File Tree and the Desktop as an Icon. What's the difference between a shortcut icon and the actual folder icon on the Desktop as well as the differences in the two systems ? What settings changed to make this happen ?

I try to keep my systems working and looking as similar as possible and don't understand why they have different folders. System #2 ( which does not have the above mentioned Desktop Icon behavior ) has empty Desktop, Templates and tmp Folders in my Home Folder but does not have a System Volume Information folder. The one mentioned above has a System Volume Information folder in my Home Folder but does not have a Desktop Folder. Now, in addition to Computer, Home and Trash, my Desktop contains all the icons for the folders in my Home folder ie ( Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, System Volume Info, Videos ) and I'd prefer them to not be there.
