On one system, using Caja, when I create a new Folder under user it shows up as expected in the File Tree but not on the Desktop, in the other ( changed ) system it shows up in the File Tree and the Desktop as an Icon. What's the difference between a shortcut icon and the actual folder icon on the Desktop as well as the differences in the two systems ? What settings changed to make this happen ?

I can do a clean install, update using Synaptic, make a few changes, paste my data files and be up and running in about 30 minutes. Now you have the Computer Icon on your Desktop. You can also check the boxes for Control Panel, Network and User Files to display them on the desktop, then click Apply and finally the OK button. I make very few changes to the stock Mate iso. Step 3: Scroll down and click on Desktop Icon Settings. Which I might do at some point.įor now I'm looking around in dconf editor, Caja preferences and Desktop settings trying to determine what might have caused this and where to change back to the settings I had yesterday. It does however, either show all or not show any icons and that's the same option as the setting in Mate Tweak. The toggle to - show / not show - desktop icons works as expected. System #1 - Until yesterday looked identical to System #2

System #2 is a dual boot Windows - PCLOS Mate system.Īny comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I try to keep my systems working and looking as similar as possible and don't understand why they have different folders. System #2 ( which does not have the above mentioned Desktop Icon behavior ) has empty Desktop, Templates and tmp Folders in my Home Folder but does not have a System Volume Information folder. The one mentioned above has a System Volume Information folder in my Home Folder but does not have a Desktop Folder. I like a clean Desktop and if I can't resolve this I'll use Mate Tweak to Uncheck the Show Desktop Icons but I'd like to understand what setting has been changed.Īn unrelated topic - I have a few systems and have two currently running for comparison. Unchecking the Show Desktop Icons removes all icons from Desktop as expected, including the Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, System Volume Info, Videos. The Mounted Volumes checkbox does not appear to do anything. Using Mate Tweak - Desktop, checking or unchecking the Computer, Home, Trash, Network boxes shows or hides the corresponding Icon on the Desktop. Some configuration setting has changed and I've been unsuccessful in finding it. One of the options is Move To ( Home or Desktop ) but that will merge the folders and I don't want that. When I right click on a Desktop Icon I have a list of options ( about 20 ) starting with Open and ending with Properties. Not as a shortcut but as a copy of the folder. Using Caja, when I create a new folder in my Home folder ( a Test folder for instance ) it shows up on the desktop as well. Using Caja I created a new Documents folder and copied the files from a backup so no worries on losing data. I thought they were shortcuts ( or links ) to Folders but when I right clicked the desktop icon Documents and selected delete, the folder and it's contents were deleted ( as if I performed that function using Caja ). Now, in addition to Computer, Home and Trash, my Desktop contains all the icons for the folders in my Home folder ie ( Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, System Volume Info, Videos ) and I'd prefer them to not be there.
